Patchouli usually brings a love/hate relationship with its signature scent. Many associate it with hippies and new age movements. I admit that I, too, was not a lover of patchouli for a long time. It came to me actually working with it to understand and appreciate how precious of an oil it is.
The essential oil from the patchouli plant is a dark, maple-syrupy color. Like a fine wine, the scent becomes better with age, and aged patchouli is an expensive and rare treat. The plant is usually found in the West Indies and in some parts of Paraguay.
Patchouli oil has a vast range of properties. It’s used in anti-aging products because it’s been known to tighten skin. There are also those that claim patchouli oil is an appetite suppressant, though essential oils should NEVER be ingested “neat.” It’s also an antidepressant, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, astringent, deodorant, fungicide and insecticide. Patchouli can also assist with new tissue growth in skin cells.

I only recently stumbled upon A Perfume Organic and immediately loved their AMAZING packaging and great message. I’m totally envious of any natural perfumer that can do the amazing blends that Amanda (the owner) can do…I’m still stuck on aromatherapy oils!
From the site:
While studying with Master Perfumers and Distillers,[Amanda] was reminded perfume was originally produced from flowers, fruit, herbs and spices. As chemicals are a cheaper alternative today, most perfumes are now formulated entirely with chemicals. Amanda only wanted to use the finest, rarest, safest, and purest ingredients from plants…she decided to launch A Perfume Organic!
The packaging is simplistic and beautiful and I love the green message behind the brand.

Granola Lab is another Brooklyn-based company (what can I say? I love my borough!) They make the MOST DELICIOUS granola and have the best combinations.
From the site:
Granola Lab creates exciting, flavorful granolas that strike the ideal sweet-savory balance. It’s better breakfast through (quasi-)science!
The picture to the left is of the AMAZING Tamarind Fusion — tamarind, banana and walnut granola

One of my most favorite companies in the world is run out of an Austin home. Fisk and Fern creates beautiful cards, accessories, and aprons that are all screen-printed by hand. The aprons to the left are also hand dyed. You might remember I wore one of them during my Brooklyn Spaces soap demo!
They “Veggie Lady” is totally adorable but secretly, I love the “Bacon Monster” the best

GROWBOTTLES are an amazing find! They’re each indoor herb gardens that have been made from repurposed wine bottles.
From the site:
Cultivate your indoor green thumb with a hydrogarden sprouting from a re-purposed wine bottle. The ideal environment for hydroponic herb-growing, allowing sunshine to permeate throughout
As a tiny apartment renter, I love the idea of these!

Twig Terrariums are the most wonderful invention from Brooklyn (besides soap, of course!). I’ve seen them around the markets and have always loved every terrarium they make. The one to the left, “Namaste”, features a teeny woman in a yoga pose. How cute is that?
From the site:
We create moss terrariums and other small worlds in antique, vintage, and new glass containers, apothecary jars, science glass, kitchenware, and any odd glass objects we find on our travels.
Each Twig Terrarium contains a very special scene using miniature figurines to complete your little green landscape – from idyllic pastoral scenes with cows and horses to angry punk rockers and Central Park muggings.

Rescue chocolate is the best thing I’ve come across this year! Their chocolate is not only 100% vegan (and tasty!) but they’ve got the most wonderful cause behind their brand:
“From each chocolate purchased, 100% of the net profits are donated to animal rescue organizations around the country.”
I love the gift collection to the left, known as the Animal House set.

Squidfire is a Baltimore-based screen-printing company that designs whimsical shirts, messenger bags, onesies, and prints. I love all of their designs, and love how they’re all still printed by hand, one at a time. Definitely recommend the fruit tee to the left or the veggies for the vegans in your life!
